What if your dermatologist not only took care of your medical concerns but you as a whole? What if they focused in on the root causes such as genetics, lifestyle and stressors to comprehensively treat you and not only improve your condition, but how you felt on a daily basis? This is exactly what Drs. Felix and Barbara Bopp do in their practice, Bopp Dermatology and Facial Plastic Surgery every day!
A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
Married for over 31 years, Drs. Felix and Barbara Bopp have been in practice together for 25 years; him a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon and her a board-certified dermatologist. This husband and wife team are constantly traveling the US and abroad to bring their patients state-of-the-art procedures and products. What truly sets them apart is the way they approach their patients’ care plan. “We focus on the patient as a whole,” Dr. Felix says. “What we do differently from most practices is our blending of both cosmetic and medical dermatology, facial plastic and functional facial surgery, all with an emphasis on overall patient wellness”. Dr. Barbara oversees a dedicated team including two PAs, three laser technicians, three aestheticians, a health coach and a nutritionist. Dr. Felix specializes in numerous facial plastic surgery procedures; eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, septum correction, the delicate skin cancer closures, Botox and oversees hair transplants and laser tattoo removals. “Our mission is creating delighted patients, not just satisfied. We ensure our patients receive the correct care in all fields, as well as proper nutrition”. The importance of the skin’s health is a direct correlation of internal wellness. The skin is the largest organ of the body; it can truly reflect what is happening inside. If you are experiencing acne, rosacea, psoriasis or even a rash, it indicates there is inflammation present in the body causing the skin to become inflamed. Dr. Barbara takes time to diagnose the condition and then educate on how to correct the actual root cause. Usually, there is a multi-dimensional approach to treating each patient. Patients are given the utmost attention, ensuring optimal results. Recently, a patient came in for a cosmetic consultation concerning her sudden changes and aging in her skin; only after taking time to meet with her, the doctors discovered she had recently experienced the loss of her mother and best friend and had not been taking proper care of herself. They took the time to listen and focused on renewing her whole self, including nutritional education and self-care support. She left not only looking better but feeling better. Rejuvenation inside and out!
Another key focus of Bopp Dermatology and Facial Plastic Surgery is patient education and awareness. Most adults have been educated since childhood to annually see their dentist for a checkup, yet they do not know that an annual skin check is covered by most insurance policies and is key at preventing and detecting skin cancer. Their mantra is ‘know the skin you are in’. They educate patients on the importance of medical grade SPFs, antioxidants and ‘sun smart’ tips to protect themselves.
One in Five Americans Will Develop Skin Cancer in Their Lifetime
May is national Skin Cancer Awareness month. Although, more than two million cases of non-melanoma will be diagnosed this year, most are preventable. However, an individual’s risk for melanoma doubles if they have had five or more sunburns in their lifetime. Yet, skin cancer, if diagnosed early, can be treated with a high success rate. Bopp Dermatology makes it their mission to promote healthy skin and encourage awareness to prevent skin cancer. They offer and promote educational tools to their patients on how to have their loved ones routinely check the moles on the back for any changes and new growths. They have complimentary professional outreach programs to train hair stylists and massage therapists on how to identify skin cancer and melanoma. For patients, the dermatology department handles the diagnostic aspect while Dr. Felix’s skilled hands from decades of facial plastic surgeries, will properly close the wound minimizing visible scarring that can be traumatic for the patient for years to come. When a patient has been diagnosed with melanoma or an aggressive skin cancer and is required to have the cancer surgically removed, often both doctors work directly with an oncologist and Moh’s surgeon to coordinate a treatment plan.
Since 1973, there has been a 2% increase yearly in melanoma cases each year. “We would see 1-2 cases a year when we first started our practice, now its 2-3 a week. With the use of tanning beds and the thinning of the ozone layer, all correspond to the increase in melanoma.” Their preferred sunscreen is ISDIN’s Eryfortona SPF 50. This physician-dispensed-only-sunscreen uses breakthrough technology that actually repairs the preexisting sun damage accumulated over decades in one’s DNA. What this means to the patient, pre-cancer cells are repaired, improving the health of the skin, while preventing future damage. In addition to sunscreen use, Bopp Dermatology recommends using ‘sun smart’ tips such as avoiding peak sun (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) for outdoor activities, using SPF 100 infused clothing for exercising or water activities and Heliocare, an oral supplement that will protect the skin from UV oxidation when taken day of, or as a long term anti-aging nutraceutical. Both Dr. Felix and Dr. Barbara are avid outdoor lovers and both have had skin cancers removed, but after making these ‘sun smart’ changes to their lifestyles, have been skin cancer free ever since. They remind all their patients of the ABC’s of skin cancer: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution.
SKIN CANCER PREVENTION TREATMENTS
Once a person has any skin cancers in their history, they are a candidate for skin cancer prevention. Bopp Dermatology offers various treatment options to prevent new growths such as Photo Dynamic Therapy, usually covered by most insurance, as well as topical options. There are cosmetic lasers as well that can switch off your aging genes and activate your younger genes, improving the appearance of the skin. One treatment, fittingly named ‘Forever Young’, is offered exclusively at the practice within the New Orleans area.
MAINTAINING HEALTHY SKIN and the TRANSITION of AGING
Patients turn to Dr. Felix and Dr. Barbara to restore their youthful appearance. They encourage their patients to stay in ‘maintenance mode’ rather than ‘crisis mode’. Far too often, they see a patient who has waited a decade or longer to begin taking care of their skin, out of a misconception they cannot afford it, or they will look ‘fake’ or simply out of fear of discomfort. They put off investing in their skin health. “We focus on a natural transition of aging to maintain your youthfulness. We assess each patient’s needs and budgets, ensuring you will look like you when you leave. Everything is handled with a conservative eye, so patients look refreshed, rested and enhanced,” Dr. Barbara explains passionately.
Bopp Dermatology and Facial Plastic Surgery offers a diverse array of treatments, services and products to address all the concerns with skin health, anti-aging and wellness.
