The Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional
The Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional offers its members a personalized fitness plan, which includes diet and exercise regimes that will address each member’s specific health and wellness needs. The Center, which opened November 1st, 2016, has nearly 6,000 members. “I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the community’s support,” says Greg Stock CEO of Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.
The Center offers group exercise classes, personal training, aquatic programs and massage therapy in a 60,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility. Group classes include cycling, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, pool aquatics, arthritis therapy, Body Combat and many more. There are currently almost 400 classes offered each month.
Margaret Theriot, Group Exercise Coordinator and Cycling Instructor, has been teaching cycling for four years. Theriot says the success of the Center has exceeded all expectations. “There are currently 90 hours of exercise classes each week and cycling classes are offered at 5:00 AM, 9:00 AM, Noon, 4:20 PM and 6:00 PM on weekdays. There’s also a 9:00 AM Saturday class,” says Theriot. Introductory classes are in the works to help new cyclist feel comfortable.
There are three variations of cycling classes offered:
- Cycle Combo is a 30-minute spin class followed by a 30-minute yoga or core class.
- RPM is a 45-minute Les Mills cycle class, which uses visualization and lots of mixed terrain, including hills and mountains. A projector helps cyclist to visualize the terrain.
- SPRINT is a 30-minute High-Intensity Training (HIIT) workout.
Indoor cycling is a sport that welcomes all ages, and it’s never too late to become a cyclist. This low impact workout not only burns calories, but has a great cardiovascular benefit. The bikes can be adjusted for those with lower back issues or for a more comfortable fit during pregnancy, although it is highly recommended that you seek clearance from your physician if you have any health issues. Another benefit of cycling is that it incorporates your core, which helps with posture, lower back issues and decreases your chances of injuries during strength training. “All of our classes are geared towards any level of experience, but we do recommend a strong fitness foundation to participate in SPRINT,” says Theriot, who advises members to participate in a cycling class three times a week.
Classes may be scheduled online at www.fitnesscenterofthibodauxregional.com or by using the app, Fit@ThibReg.
The Center has recently added 50 new bikes, which will more than double their original class capacity of 40. A new classroom space is being developed to accommodate the additions. “It’s exciting, it’s more than we could have ever imagined,” says Theriot.
The bikes are all smart phone compatible. Each bike has a barcode that can be scanned and all of your information from that session is stored on your phone. It tracks your wattage, calories burned, distance and even your heart rate, if you are wearing a heart rate monitor. This allows you to track your progress along the way.
“So many of our members have wonderful success stories. Some of those who participate in our cycling classes are actual road cyclist and they have been able to add resistance, build strength, stamina and endurance. They are setting new personal records for themselves,” says Theriot. She also says that many participants are excited about having dropped multiple clothes sizes and there are others who have been able to discontinue their blood pressure medications. “Self-health is most important to me and it’s great knowing people are taking control of their health. Exercising helps more than just a person’s physical health, it releases endorphins which help people to feel happier. Their outlook on life changes and their faces are brighter,” says Theriot.
The Fitness Center is quickly becoming a social place where friends and families gather to meet their wellness goals and enjoy the company of others. “There’s a camaraderie here, we’re a family and our members are gracious and so welcoming of everyone. It’s a pleasure to work with them,” Theriot says.
